Essential Home Improvement Projects to Tackle This Spring

The trees are budding, flowers are blooming, and there’s a warm breeze in the air. We’ve officially made it to spring, which means now’s the perfect time to tidy up and repair the damage from winter storms! Below are some essential home improvement projects that can give your home a big boost in curb appeal.

Pressure-Wash Away Grime

A pressure washer can make a world of difference to a dirty driveway, front porch, or siding. Keep in mind, though, that pressure washing can damage wood and other soft materials, so if you’re uncertain about pressure washing a certain area, try testing out a small, inconspicuous area before moving on to the rest. In addition, always use a cleaner that is made for pressure washers and intended for the type of surface you’re cleaning.

Fix Driveway Cracks

If you suspect that the cracks in your driveway are looking a little bigger than they used to, it’s not in your head; it’s common for winter rain to freeze and expand existing imperfections. To fix up your driveway, removing any grass or weeds, then clean it thoroughly with a pressure washer. Finally, patch any cracks or holes with a concrete resurfacer. Worn-out asphalt driveways can be restored by applying a coat of latex asphalt sealer.

De-Gunk the Gutters

Winter storms have likely blown dead leaves and other debris into your gutters, so now is a perfect time to clean them out. If you don’t have anything to use to scoop out the gunk that’s accumulated, you can easily make one by cutting a narrow plastic container, like an empty jug of laundry detergent, into a scoop-like shape. Once you’ve removed the bulk of the debris, check that the downspouts aren’t clogged by running water through them. If you see that the gutter joints are leaking, you can repair them with gutter sealant.

Have Your Garage Door Inspected and Repaired

We use our garage doors every day, but we rarely take the time to examine their conditions. Since garage door torsion springs lift and hold an enormous amount of weight, they can become worn out or damaged in a short amount of time, and go unnoticed until they become dangerous. While you’re taking care of your other spring cleaning tasks, this is a great time to have your garage door inspected, tuned up, and repaired for the coming year! As an added bonus, maintaining your garage door every year like this will help you save money on costly repairs and replacements in the long run.
