How to (Finally) Organize Your Garage, From Our Apex Garage Door Installers

Garages are designed to house our cars, but they usually end up holding much, much more. Tools, hardware, toys, exercise equipment, boxes of old clothes, books—anything that we don’t have a place for, but are reluctant to throw out, seems to end up in the garage.

If your hoard of garage stuff is becoming so big that your cars are forced to sit outside, it’s time to get organized. Here are some easy ways to get your garage under control.

Take Inventory

First things first: Go through your garage and make a list of what you want to keep, what you want to throw out, what you need to fix up, and what you’d like to donate. If you have time, separate those items into piles (you might have to open your garage door and use the free space in the driveway to do this.)

Invest in Storage Bins

Your next stop is going to be your local home improvement store. The piles you made earlier should give you some clue to the sizes you’ll need. Be sure to purchase clear storage bins, so that when you need something in a hurry, you can see what they contain without opening them. Keep your receipt, and return anything that isn’t the right size.

Another handy tip: place heavy things in small bins, and light things in large bins. If you fill a large bin with, say, slabs of slate for a future landscaping project, you’ll never be able to lift or move it by yourself.

Install or Purchase Garage Shelving

If you still have lawn equipment, tools, bikes, and the like taking up the space where your cars should be, you might want to make an extra investment in some shelving or cabinets. You can do this yourself, or hire a local contractor to do it for you.

Clean and Inspect Your Garage Doors

When all’s said and done, you should have a nice, clean garage that you can navigate easily. And since we’re guessing this hasn’t been the case in a long time, this is the perfect opportunity to take a look at your garage doors to make sure they are functioning safely and correctly. If your garage door won’t rise fully, squeaks, or has another issue, call a professional garage door company to perform an inspection. Since garage doors can be dangerous and even deadly if they break, it’s better to be proactive than sorry!
