Steel or Aluminum Garage Doors: Which is Better? | Cary Custom Garages

If you’ve got your mind set on purchasing a metal garage door, your next question might be which is better, steel garage doors, or aluminum? The answer depends on your budget, insulation needs, and style preferences. Learn more below from our Cary custom garage door contractor.

Benefits of Steel Garage Doors

Steel is the most popular material for garage doors, and with good reason: this extremely durable material is most likely to give you the best bang for your buck. A steel garage door is likely to last about as long as your home does, and can withstand all the wear and tear that a family can put on it: newly-licensed teenagers backing into it; kids running into it with their bikes; and even—dare we suggest—your own personal mishaps.

Another great advantage of steel garage doors is that, since they are so popular, it’s easy to find the color and style you want, usually without having to pay extra.

Benefits of Aluminum Garage Doors

The major benefit of an aluminum garage door is its cost. Since aluminum is lighter than steel, aluminum doors tend to be less expensive, while sharing many characteristics with steel garage doors (easy to clean, weather-resistant, etc.) With that said, however, it’s important not to be penny-wise and pound-foolish when selecting your new garage door material. While an aluminum garage door has a lower up-front cost, it will also cost you more in repair and maintenance over the years.

Other Material Options

If you’re still unsure if you even want a metal garage door, period, your two other options are wood, and vinyl. Vinyl doors are known as the “kid-proof” garage doors because they’re extremely hard to dent or break. They’re very durable, and only require an occasional hose-down. However, vinyl doors come in considerably fewer colors and designs, and some buyers find them less attractive than wooden, steel, or aluminum doors.

Wooden garage doors are very beautiful and authentic, but very costly both in up-front price and ongoing maintenance. Wooden garage doors need frequent refinishing and touch-ups, and don’t last as long as doors made from other materials. If you really love the look of wood, but can’t afford the time commitment and price tag, composite wood is a good substitute that looks almost as good as the real thing.
